Potty Training Suggestions Wanted

Our son is potty training, but it's happening very slowly. How do you know when your child is ready? And when he's ready, how do you prevent accidents? How long does it typically take between their first interest in potty training to a non-accident lifestyle? (Realizing, of course, that kids are each unique and on their own schedule). Any thoughts or advice?
